This article made me cry too. I can hardly wait for the 9/11 Memorial Museum to open next year so I can visit the Porter-Gaud children's mural firsthand.
Ten years ago I too was a teacher, of High School English and of American History. I encouraged my students to discuss and share their thoughts and feelings, live and on paper, which led to some amazingl writing. Some of my usually reluctant writers turned out the most eloquent pieces. I posted their work, then complied their essays into a booklet.
In November of 2001, the students joined with me in sending donations of toys and other gifts to bereaved 9/11 children in New York. It comforted me to know that some good could come out of such horror, giving our youngsters a positive lesson about supporting one another and our country.

Such a wonderful story, it certainly stirred my emotions. As I read tears fell from my eyes. I have a daughter now attending Porter Gaud school. We where living in Atlanta,GA ten years ago. I am so glad Ms. Orvin was such a perceptive Art Teacher who could help the children work through their feelings and show their willingness to try to help. The Mural captured the essence of how we felt that day. Art is certainly an expression of history as felt by the Artists and the times. I'm glad she is able to attend a wonderful and caring school.
