Daniel Strobel, Jr.

Artist: Strobel, Louisa C. (Mrs. Benjamin Martin )
Date: 1826

The father of the artist, Daniel Strobel was descended from a German family who were early settlers in Charleston. He served as consul at Bordeaux where his children were brought up. Later he was Deputy Collector of the Port of New York. The realism and directness of this portrait is stark and is enhanced by the somber colors and yellow-green background.
