unidentified sitter

Artist: Unknown American
Date: ca. 1790s

For a time this miniature was thought to be a miniature of John Huger by Henry Benbridge. Closer examination, however, has led to the unattribution of both artist and sitter. While probably painted by an American artist, it is not consistent with Benbridge's handling of other works; nor does this likeness resemble the oil portrait of Huger by Edward Savage (City Hall, Charleston).
