Earth's Rainbow: The Natural Palette with Kristy Bishop

May 16, 2020 @ 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Gibbes Museum of Art

Natural dyes are equal parts color theory and chemistry. In this workshop with Kristy Bishop, participants will learn how to extract cochineal, osage orange, madder root, and onion skins. In addition, they will learn the basics of indigo and use it in combination with the other dyes to create a rainbow of color. Kristy will provide swatches of silk chiffon, raw silk, cotton gauze and recipe cards that can be used in a dye journal. These cards become a record of how to achieve a multitude of colors using different mordants, dyes, and after baths.

After experimenting with these different combinations, Kristy will demonstrate some folding and clamping tie-dye techniques to be used on larger fabric. Participants will be able to dye a 12” x 12” piece of the silk chiffon, raw silk, and cotton gauze as well as an 11” x 60” crepe de chine silk scarf to dye in any color combination. In addition, participants can bring personal items to dye such as garments, napkins, or pillowcases. Dyeing can be messy, so please dress accordingly. Tuition includes all materials.
