the Gibbes!

Planned Giving

Many valuable volunteers, members and friends graciously remember the Gibbes in their wills with bequests of funds and/or works of art. Such gifts demonstrate the donor’s commitment to the Gibbes and the visual arts in Charleston and reflect the rich tradition of giving that is the foundation of the permanent collection and museum building. Over 95% of the collections ten thousand objects have been donated to the museum. Likewise, James S. Gibbes’ gift of $100,000 in 1905 built the beaux arts building that houses the collection.

You need not be wealthy to leave a legacy to the Gibbes through estate or financial planning. Planned giving can be as simple as making a bequest in your will or naming the museum as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. There may also be substantial tax benefits to you as a result of your gift.

Planned giving ensures the Gibbes Museum of Art's ability to reach generations to come. Information about planned giving is available by contacting Angela D. Mack (, Executive Director, at (843) 722.2706, ext. 31.
