Women’s Council of the Carolina Art Association

The Women’s Council of the Carolina Art Association serves as a vital support system of the Gibbes Museum of Art. The Women’s Council volunteers time, talent and financial support to the museum. Its dedicated members also serve as liaisons between the Gibbes and both residents of and visitors to the Charleston community.

Founded in March 1950 as the Gibbes Art Gallery Auxiliary, the Women’s Council currently boasts 150 active members in addition to association, sustaining, affiliate, guest and honorary members.

Volunteer opportunities provided through membership include in-house museum assistance with Visitor Services, the Museum Store, education programs and opportunities to train and serve as a museum docent.  Other opportunities involve active participation on such Council committees as Hospitality, Programs and the Flower Arrangements committee.

Membership is open to female members of the museum.  Women’s Council meetings are held at the museum on the second Monday of the month, September through November and January through May.  Speakers provide information on various aspects of the museum, art making, and art history or provide information relevant to the art Community in Charleston.
