Lady William Campbell (Sarah Izard)

Artist: Fraser, Charles
Date: 1834

The daughter of Ralph lzard, Sarah married Lord Campbell in 1763. Campbell was appointed governor of South Carolina in 1775 and the couple was forced to flee the city the following year when the Revolution broke out. They returned to England where she remained until her death.

The original portraits of Sarah Izard and her husband were painted before 1776 and eventually returned to England where they have descended through the Campbell line. Their return to England, however, could not have been before Fraser made a copy. It is listed in his account book under 1834.
