John Gaillard [recto] and Theodore Gaillard [verso]

Artist: Unknown British
Date: ca. 1780

John and Theodore Gaillard were brothers who studied at the Middle Temple in London. According to tradition, this double locket, which is presently mounted as a swivel pin, was painted in London while the boys were at school. The portraits are simple, suggesting an artist not working in the high-fashion circles of London. This double portrait could have been a gift for their mother or other relative, sent back to Charleston while they were abroad.
