Mrs. Daniel Strobel, Jr. (Anna Church)

Artist: Strobel, Louisa C. (Mrs. Benjamin Martin )
Date: ca.1830

Since Daniel Martin's bequest in 1925 this miniature has been identified as a portrait of Anna Strobel Bicknell, the artist's sister. As the sitter is clearly an older woman, it is much more plausible that the woman was in fact Louisa's mother. In addition, the size and format make an appropriate pair to Daniel Strobel, Jr.'s likeness. Mrs. Strobell's elaborate headdress is probably of Bordeaux lace. The rigid pose, combined with precise detailing lead to an almost iconic image.
