Emma Gilchrist was the wife of lawyer and amateur artist John S. Cogdell. At one time the portrait of Mrs. Cogdell was attributed to Fraser, perhaps because of its association with Fraser's portrait of her husband. Like that miniature, Mrs. CogdeIl's portrait is severe, with somber tones and an almost frontal pose.
