Abraham Crouch

Artist: Vallée, Jean François de la
Date: ca. 1805

Crouch was a lawyer from Providence, Rl, who lived in Charleston. In 1806 he married Sophia Withers. Vallee may have painted this portrait in 1805 or 1806, prior to Crouch's wedding, and the miniature, which has an especially rich and elaborate case of gold, enamel and seed pearls may have been given to the future Mrs. Crouch. The portrait shows a solid-looking and handsome man. The outline of the head against the opaque background is one of the hallmarks of Vallee's style.
