Mrs. R. V. Hurtel (Lea Rose Victoria Jude)

Artist: Robinson, John
Date: 1822

The locket is engraved on the verso, "R. V. Hurtel to LVR 1822," suggesting that the miniature was painted during the courtship of Hurtel and Lea Rose. While Robinson's training was English, the miniature resembles continental -- and specifically French -- examples in its flat gray background and careful attention to dress. The facial features are sensitively drawn and the face is softly modelled to give a convincing sense of volume.
