unidentified sitter

Artist: Meucci, Antonio
Date:

Antonio Meucci came to the United States with his wife, also a miniature painter, from Rome in 1818. They worked in New Orleans for years before traveling to Charleston, Baltimore, Havana, New York City, Boston, and other cities. Miniatures of children were popular in America because they represented a family and the idea of lineage. The sitter's youth is captured in the chubby facial features and short arms.
