Traditionally, the sitter is said to be Eliza Huger, who married Alfred Dunkin in 1851. However, the style of dress and painting places the portrait closer to 1800. The pale coloring and delicate handling of paint make the portrait elegantly understated. The long curl over her left shoulder helps to enliven the portrayal.
