Mrs. Julius Pringle (Sarah Forrester Ashmead)

Artist: Tooley, James, Jr.
Date: ca. 1844

A native of Lancaster, PA, Sarah married Pringle in 1844. Their marriage was marred by illness. The portrait is a charming and bright portrayal of a young woman, and while probably painted at the same time as Julius Pringle's they do not seem to have been conceived of as a pair. The effect of the clouds at the bottom is somewhat dreamy and contrasts the wholesome realism of her face and the somber tones of his portrait.
