Maria Hill of St. Augustine, FL married Sanchez in 1787. He was a prominent and wealthy citizen in St. Augustine. She had the reputation of a strong character, which is aptly portrayed in her portrait. Cloriviere appears to delight in Mrs. Sanchez's finery, in particular her pearls and long earrings. The portrait, at one time wrongly attributed to James Peale, was probably painted about 1806-1807 during Cloriviere's extensive travels.
