Born at Drayton Hall, the handsome Palladian home built by his father on the Ashley River, Drayton studied medicine at Edinburgh, where he was graduated in 1770. During the Revolution he was commissioned captain in the South Carolina Artillery Regiment and later became a member of the Society of Cincinnati. In 1785 he was elected Lieutenant-Governor.
This is a strong characterization, enhanced by the unusual three-quarter pose and the intensity of the Prussian blue coat. A likeness of Dr. Drayton is the twelfth entry in Fraser's account book.
