A native of London, Alexander emigrated to Charleston ca. 1760. He became an active member of the congregation of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim and performed the duties of lay rabbi 1764-1782. He held the position of auditor at the U.S. Custom House at Charleston 1802-1813 and was a founder and first Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of the Scottish-Rite. The miniature has consistently been attributed to Sully. Certain passages in it are awkward, including the painting of the body.
