Mourning Ring: Jane Shoolbred

Artist: Unknown
Date: after 1784

Engraved on the inside of this ring is, "Jane Shoolbred Ob 26 Feby 1784 Aet 42." Made for someone to mark Jane's death, this mourning ring illustrates popular mourning imagery in late 18th century America. These images frequently included a woman crying beside a grave or urn and included evocative phrases. "Forgive the wish that we have kept thee here" reminds the viewer not to be selfish and want someone to stay alive forever. Rather remember that they have moved on to a better place of eternal rest.
