Born in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, Tobias Bowles married into a wealthy Charleston family and settled here. There is a scene of a woman in a garden on the miniature's reverse. She gives two doves a garland of flowers, perhaps referencing the love and union between Bowles and his wife. Many scenes like this found on miniatures are all in shades of brown, but this painting has touches of blues, pinks, and yellows that highlight the vitality of the flowers.
