John Deas

Artist: Smart, John
Date: 1773

Painted by John Smart, considered one of the greatest British miniature painters of the 18th century, this miniature is a fascinating example of functional artwork. This miniature case converts from a necklace to a bracelet and back again. The top loop snaps out and bracelet hardware (a piece with small holes much like those at the bottom of this miniature) snaps in. This fashionable accessory was probably commissioned by Deas in London before returning home to Charleston after a three-year European tour.
