Charles Fraser

Artist: Vallée, Jean François de la
Date: ca. 1800

The association of the portrait with Fraser is traditional, but has been questioned. The profile, with its pronounced nose, sloping brow and full lips does resemble Fraser's Self-Portrait of 1823. The way in which the profile is cut at the neckline, the absence of clothing and the monochromatic gray coloring suggest that Vallee was attempting a cameo-like image. His usual unidealizing style and linear technique are apparent.
