Mr. Derry Gillison

Artist: Unknown
Date: ca. 1800

A native of Massachusetts, Gillison came to South Carolina and established a successful tanning business near Coosawhatchie, Jasper County. Probably painted about 1800, Gillison's miniature is striking because of the linear treatment of hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, its cool blue coloring, and the precise depiction of the features: long, pointed nose, small mouth and dimple in the chin.
