Nathaniel Barnwell Heyward III

Artist: Fraser, Charles
Date: ca. 1839

Heyward was born in Beaufort, and was educated at Yale. He was a rice planter who served for a short time in the state senate. Typical of the later rectangular format used by Fraser, the miniature continues in the tradition of fine likenesses of handsome young men. In this instance, Fraser has offered some variety in the use of the mottled blue-pink sky. Numerous entries for Mr. Heyward recur in the account book; most likely this one was done in 1839.
