Dr. Johnson was a noted Charleston physician as well as historian and author of "Traditions and Reminiscences Chiefly of the American Revolution in the South." Like other portraits of the mid-1820s, Johnson's miniature is a meticulously painted and penetrating likeness. The face, in particular, is strongly modelled with convincing highlights on the eyes and the nose. Johnson's miniature is the first one listed in the account book for 1825.
