Ralph Stead Izard

Artist: Engleheart, George
Date: ca. 1802

Born in Charleston, lzard was studying abroad in 1802 and 1803 when his portraits were painted. He returned to the Pee Dee region of South Carolina where he owned extensive property devoted to rice. The father of Ralph Stead and Anne lzard, he died at age thirty-three.

Two portraits of a Mr. lzard are listed by Engleheart in 1802 and 1803. It is difficult to determine which was painted first, and if the second was a mere replica.
