Leila Waring was born in Charleston but received her earliest art instruction while living in Bessemer, Alabama. Her teacher, however, was colorblind, and stressed the importance of working in black and white. Upon returning to Charleston, Waring continued her studies with the Carolina Art Association and went to New York to learn more. Still working in black and white, Waring witnessed a fellow student painting a colorful miniature. From then on she devoted her artistic life to miniature painting.
