Hume, who had served as an aide to General Francis Marion during the Revolution, became the owner of Hopsewee Plantation along the North Santee River.
In 1822 Fraser recorded in his account book a portrait of Hume, and again in 1841, a replica. It is generally believed that this is another copy by Bounetheau, although it has also been ascribed to Fraser and to Charles Lanneau. In comparison to the Fraser original, the face and body have been given broader proportions while the stippling is more regular.
