The identification of the sitter is traditional, but nothing is presently known about him. Probably painted between 1800 and 1810, the portrait is distinctive for its dark and heavily brushed background, the speckled coloring of the hair and the thick eyebrows. The verso contains an attractive pastoral scene of a woman, three sheep and a small dogs at a country gate.
