Decorative casework is an integral part of many miniature paintings. Here, the sitter is framed with an elaborate border or colored glass, copper, and gold as well as a vibrant piece of cobalt glass on the back surrounding a simple hair design. The pattern of the glass is created with embossed foil layered beneath the glass. Each decorative piece is a separate element of the case that comes apart, making this seeming simple miniature a complex work of art.
