Left widowed at age thirty-three, Mrs. Jones conducted a school in her home for young girls. She was painted by Samuel F. B. Morse during his sojourn (1817-1821) in Charleston, and in both portraits is shown wearing a lace-trimmed bonnet. The characterization and modelling of Mrs. Jones' miniature is strong, and suggests an intelligent and self-reliant woman. The background consists of a careful cross-hatched pattern and is an unusual pink-lavender.
