Traditionally this portrait has been identified as James Stanyarne, a planter on John's Island. As Stanyarne died eleven years before the miniature was painted, this identification may be incorrect, or the miniature may be a copy after another portrait. The gold locket bears the following inscription: "Died May 1780 aged 43." The dark green background and rust-colored coat are unusual for Henri, and may corroborate the fact that this is a copy. However, certain curling and linear mannerisms in the eyes, eyebrows and lips are thoroughly characteristic.
