Mrs. James Shoolbred Gibbes (Mary Evans)

Artist: Unknown
Date: 1866

The bright coloring of Mrs. Gibbes' portrait displays one of the advantages of the enamel medium, in contrast to the use of watercolors on ivory. In addition, because the colors have been baked into the porcelain substance, no protective glass is necessary. Mrs. Gibbes, who appears as a Victorian matron, is shown wearing a miniature portrait brooch at her neck.
