The young wife of Abraham Crouch, Sophia died at age twenty-one and is buried in St. Philip's churchyard. The portrait was probably painted ca. 1805 when Sophia was in her teens. There is a youthful and wistful expression which is enhanced by the pale colors. While the face is strongly modelled, the hair has a linear quality and the body is awkwardly proportioned, suggesting perhaps an artist who was beginning his career.
