Martha Swinton was married to John Ball, Sr. and, following his death, she married A. T. Taveau. She had fifteen children. An attractive likeness, it was probably painted about 1815. The artist has lavished a lot of attention on her numerous curls. The coral necklace helps to soften and give dimension to the portrait.
