Mrs. William John Grayson (Susan Greene)

Artist: Fraser, Charles
Date: 1848

Some confusion exists about the name of the sitter. A Susan Greene married William John Grayson of Beaufort in 1798. He passed away in the early years of the next century and she remarried, becoming Mrs. William Joyner. However, in the Fraser Gallery number 294 is listed as Mrs. John Grayson and this miniature has always been associated with that name. The late date, 1848, of the miniature and the tender portrayal suggests that Fraser may have had a special reason for painting this portrait. Articles of clothing and the red chair help to set off the face and enliven the portrait.
