Joseph Hinson

Artist: Geslain
Date: 1801

A ship captain, Hinson traveled the route between Carolina, England and Bermuda, and was presumed lost at sea in 1801. The locket verso bears the following inscription around a monogram, J H in gold: "Taken 1 Jany 1801/aged 29 years 11 months." The utter simplicity of the sitter placed centrally in the round format is very striking. The features are sharply portrayed, including his eyes and eyebrows, dimple, wrinkles and five o'clock shadow. The background and hair have distinct striations in the paint which lend texture.
