Barnard Elliott

Artist: Unknown
Date: ca. 1775

Barnard Elliott is shown wearing the uniform of the Fourth South Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line. The son of Barnard and Elizabeth Boisgard Elliott, he married Mary Bellinger and their portraits were painted by Jeremiah Theus at the time of their wedding in 1766 (Gibbes Museum of Art). Formerly attributed to Henry Benbridge (1743-1812), the light coloring and painting technique of this miniature are atypical of Benbridge's style.
