As a young girl, Elizabeth had been painted by Henri. This portrait is believed to have been painted in New York in 1806, where Elizabeth arrived after the traumatic shipwreck of the "Rose in Bloom" which took her father's (General John McPherson) life. The portrait shows a pleasing likeness of a young, fashionably dressed woman. The illusion of the thin fabric of her dress is very convincing. In coloration and pose the miniature displays the influence of Malbone.
