William Cattell Bee

Artist: Fraser, Charles
Date: 1848

Bee's second wife was Ann Jane North. Typical of Fraser's late work, Bee's portrait has somber coloring, harsh stippling and a rigid pose. The fact that the stippling around the body and the head, in particular, is accentuated contributes to a disconcerting halo effect. Traditionally dated to ca. 1845, a portrait of "Mr. Bee . . . $50" is listed in the account book for 1842.
