The United States has been called "Nature's Nation" because images of American scenery have played an important role in the development of national identity.
A renowned scholar of nineteenth-century American painting, Dr. Linda Ferber currently serves as the Senior Art Historian and Museum Director Emerita of the New-York Historical Society. Ferber will reflect upon the still-prevailing assumption that American scenery embodies American cultural and political ideals.
A book signing of the catalog for the
Painting a Nation: Hudson River School Landscapes from the Higdon Collection exhibition will follow the lecture.
