Dr. Gülru Çakmak, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director of Art History, UMass Amherst, and
Dr. Luke Bouvier, Graduate Program Director for French and Francophone Studies at UMass Amherst will examine the societal changes in France during the late nineteenth century and how those artists and authors grappled with their changing world. Their conversation will take a close look at some well-known Impressionist artists and compare those images with excerpts from Zola, Boudelaire, and others. From life in the metropolis to new behaviors of consumerism, Çakmak and Bouvier will examine themes that bind these artists and authors to the new, industrialized Paris.
