Join us for a book club-style discussion of Luncheon of the Boating Party, a novel by Susan Vreeland, inspired by Light Effects: The French Impressionists, an exhibition highlighting the works of French masters Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Auguste Renoir, Paul Gaugin, and others drawn to the short loose brushstrokes, bright colors, and focus on modern life that became the language of Impressionism. Vreeland's Luncheon of the Boating Party, like August Renoir's painting of the same name, illuminates Paris in the summer of 1880. Renoir depicted fourteen Parisians from all walks of life enjoying la vie moderne on the terrace of La Maison Fournaise, relaxing and conversing on a Sunday afternoon. Vreeland recreates his creation, introducing us to the artist and his creative process, his friends, and his world. This discussion will take place at the Gibbes Museum of Art in the Education Center on the first floor and virtually. Stop by Harken Café at 62 Queen Street to pick up a handcrafted beverage and morning pastry to enjoy while we talk. Show your Gibbes Membership card for 10% off. The discussion will focus on the book and the works in the exhibition. Please read the book so you can participate in the discussion. For more information, contact Becca Hiester at 843-722-2706x237 or via e-mail. The discussion will be a hybrid, meeting both in-person and virtually.
