Class meets for three sessions on Monday, February 24, Tuesday, February 25, and Wednesday, February 26 from 10am-4pm Join artist Sally Smith in this three-day oil painting workshop where she will guide each student closer to their goals in painting. Learn the basics of mixing colors to blocking out a composition and the tools of painting: supplies, palette layout, colors, design, composition, perspective, values, focal points, hard and soft edges, texture, and many other components. Each day begins with a brief demonstration covering some of these issues and helping students to see how one can approach a painting from start to finish. Students will work on their own paintings with individual attention and assistance from Sally. On the last day, there is a helpful critique of everyone’s work. From Sally: “My style of teaching strives to be one of encouragement and classes usually have a very good time together. Painting is not just about the painting we end up with, it is about the journey to get there and sometimes it takes us places we did not expect! I look forward to meeting and growing with you.” CLASS CANCELED Suggested Supplies:
Brushes: Size 2 – 8 Flats or Bright Bristle (I prefer “brights”), One small “rigger” for signing
Colors: Titanium white, Cadmium yellow lemon or pale, Yellow ochre (optional), Cadmium red light, Alizarin crimson, Green earth (optional), Viridian green, Ultramarine blue, Cerulean blue, Purple(or any of your favorite other colors, but only a few)
Other Supplies: Odorless mineral spirits as paint thinner, paper towels, plastic bags for trash, palette knife, medium cups, palette
Canvases: 8 x 10 – 16 x 20, several for each day. Nothing larger, please, unless you are very experienced. Some people like to tone their canvas with a color wash ahead of time, which is fine, or bring them in the natural canvas color.
Source Material: Bring photographs or, even better, pictures of several paintings you would like to paint like from a magazine that you could copy. This is good practice! All of the old masters began this way. RECOMMENDED Reading (optional)
