For women artists working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was difficult to assert themselves in an environment dominated by men. However, by the 1950s, female artists had made significant inroads and were gaining wider representation in museum collections, exhibitions, and academe.
Martha Severens will discuss how these women persisted against bias and discrimination and developed successful careers in the art world. A book signing and gallery tour will follow.
Ms. Severens is an independent art historian and author who has served as a curator of the Greenville County Museum of Art; the Gibbes Museum of Art; and the Portland (Maine) Museum of Art. Ms. Severens also contributed the essay
