Nearly fifty years after David Driskell’s landmark exhibition and eponymous publication, Two Centuries of Black American Art, Driskell’s legacy as an artist, curator, and art collector is still shaping the contemporary art scene. In conjunction with our Artist Spotlight series, join us in conversation with Dr. Julie McGee for a discussion on the life and work of David Driskell and the broader influence of Black art on American visual culture.
Dr. McGee is a professor of art history and Africana studies at the University of Delaware. McGee's work includes a 2006 monograph on Driskell's life and art, curation at the David Driskell Center, and curation of the 2021 exhibition David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History.
