Introduction to Scratchboard

February 6, 2021 @ 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Gibbes Museum of Art

Class Canceled

Join artist Stephen Herchak for this fun introduction to scratchboard, inspired by the look and feel of prints in our current exhibition Charleston Collects: Devotion and Fantasy, Witchcraft and the World's End. Scratchboard, sometimes referred to as scraperboard, is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white layer beneath, producing an ultra-high contrast image. When executed in a stylized manner it can give the impression of woodblock or linocut printing, and when a realistic technique is employed is capable of capturing exceptionally fine detail. All supplies are included with tuition but students must bring a printed reference of more than one high contrast black and white image from which to work.

Please Note: This is not a drawing class and scratchboard is a very precise medium. A strong level of ability in freehand drawing is required in order to create detailed scratchboard images.
