Lunchtime Lecture Series: Sporting & Wildlife Arts

Enjoy hearing from artists and curators about the genre of sporting and wildlife arts spanning the 17th century to present. Both days will feature back-to-back speakers and participants will enjoy a boxed lunch prepared by The Daily.

Friday, February 15:

12noon: Tim Newton, board chairman, Salmagundi Club, New York City

An avid art collector, Tim Newton is the chairman of the board of directors of the Salmagundi Club, one of the oldest art organizations in the United States. The club owns a collection of over 1,500 works of art spanning its 140 year history and has a membership of nearly 850 artists and patrons. Tim is also the founder and curator of the club’s American Masters Fine Art Exhibition and Sale, which takes place annually.

1pm: Reports from the Field with Katie Wood Kirchoff, associate curator, Shelburne Museum

What do a pair of Bean Boots, a tuxedo, and a deerstalker hat have in common? Join curator Katie Wood Kirchhoff to investigate this and other questions while exploring the exhibition Lying in Wait: Sporting Art by Ogden M. Pleissner. Together we will hike the dusty landscapes of Dubois, Wyoming, float through old-growth forests on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick, Canada, explore the piney lowlands of the exclusive Okeetee Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina, and more.

Saturday, February 16:

12noon: A Life Afield and in the Studio with Sandy Scott, wildlife sculptor

Surrounded by mountains, lakes and streams in her Wyoming and Canadian Lake Country studios, Sandy Scott is an avid outdoorswoman, licensed pilot, and lives the life she depicts. She is the daughter of an Oklahoma rancher, and was trained at the Kansas City Art Institute. Early in life she worked as an animation background artist for the motion picture industry and as a commercial artist. A Fellow of the National Sculpture Society and member of the National Arts Club her work is in important collections and museums.

1pm: Sporting and Wildlife Sculpture in the Collection of Brookgreen Gardens with Robin R. Salmon, VP of Art and Historical Collections/Curator of Sculpture, Brookgreen Gardens

The sculpture collection of Brookgreen Gardens is rich in works by America’s great historic and contemporary animal sculptors, including those by its founder, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Robin Salmon will lead you through a brief history of Brookgreen Gardens and will discuss many of the sculptors of animals, domestic and wild, whose work has helped make the Brookgreen collection among the best of its kind.
