At a snail’s pace, Clare Hu works backwards through time and landscape, loosely trailing the movement of Chinese American immigrants and the paths taken to establish and find space for themselves in the American South. Maps are painted onto woven textiles to be stitched together with images of family members and landscape markings, while textile patterns are drafted from sampling and rearranging elements of overshot weaving drafts. Utilizing systems of making and unmaking, Hu detangles physical and personal distances between disparate cultural spaces, honoring the slippery and often happenstance ways people move and immigrate, and the chances they take. The path to community and a sense of place looks less like a well-planned route and more like a constellation of desire lines overlapping over the next, crossing into one another.
