As a fifth-generation Charleston artist, Stephen Elliott Webb carries on the tradition of taking the inspiring sights and textures of the world around him and creating passion-filled works of art. Webb has shifted away from his traditional training, and now employs the style of Abstract Expressionism.

While at the Gibbes, he will undertake a series of “Selfie Portraits”—abstract paintings that interpret a selection of selfies submitted by via social media and chosen by a panel of judges with creative expertise. Through a system of enlarged templates derived from the photographs, Webb will create larger-than-life paintings that abstract the face into patterns of light and dark, positive and negative space. In contrast to the miniature portraits on view in the galleries of the Gibbes—small, hyper-detailed images that fit in the palm of one’s hand—Webb’s Selfie Portraits will be 48 x 36” and painted using techniques that he employs in his Abstract Expressionist paintings.

OPEN STUDIO HOURS:

WEDNESDAY 10AM - 8PM | THURSDAY, FRIDAY, & SATURDAY 10AM - 5PM

Stephen will be out of town October 12—October 15.
